In the Global Gender Gap Report 2014, Armenia ranked 103rd out of 142 countries. Last year it ranked 94th among 136 countries.
In order for the world to close gender gaps, experts track and measure them over time. The Global Gender Gap Report 2014 strives to understand the gaps between women and men and to see if women have the same rights and opportunities as men regardless of whether they live in poor or rich countries.
“Through the Global Gender Gap Report 2014, the World Economic Forum quantifies the magnitude of gender-based disparities and tracks their progress over time. While no single measure can capture the complete situation, the Global Gender Gap Index presented in this Report seeks to measure one important aspect of gender equality: the relative gaps between women and men across four key areas: health, education, economy and politics.” The Global Gender Gap Report 2014
While Armenia ranked 103rd in overall rankings, it ranked 82nd in the economic participation and opportunity index, 31st in educational attainment, 142nd in health and survival and 123rd in political empowerment (it ranked 115th in women in parliament and 98th in women in ministerial positions).
In the 2014 report, published since 2006, Iceland ranked number one followed by Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Among Armenia’s neighbours Georgia ranked 85th (86th in 2013), Azerbaijan ranked 94th (99th in 2013), Turkey ranked 125th (120th in 2013) and Iran ranked 137th (130th in 2013).
The United States ranked 20th (23rd in 2013) and Russia ranked 75th (61st in 2013)
Countries at the bottom of the ranking are Mali, Chad, Pakistan and Yemen.
The Global Gender Gap Report provides a framework for capturing the magnitude and scope of gender-based disparities around the world.
